From Yarn to Handbag: Our Making Process

Namaste from Dehradun! I’m Sarita, and creating a crochet handbag at Aasma is my favorite ritual—a blend of patience, creativity, and Himalayan-inspired joy. Here’s how a simple skein transforms into your stylish tote or crossbody companion.

Step 1: Yarn Selection

It starts in our cozy Uttarakhand home with choosing premium, eco-friendly yarn. I feel each strand for softness and strength—cotton for breathability, wool blends for durability—ensuring it drapes beautifully and withstands daily adventures.

Step 2: Pattern Sketching

Over a cup of chai, I sketch the design on paper: shape, strap length, pocket placement. Inspired by Dehradun’s markets, I mix traditional motifs like florals with modern minimalism, customizing for size (tote or sling).

Step 3: Foundation Chain

With my favorite hook, I begin the base chain—counting meticulously for an even start. This forms the bag’s bottom, crocheted in sturdy single stitches for a solid foundation that won’t sag.

Step 4: Building the Body

Round by round, I increase stitches for the sides, switching to half-double for texture. I add subtle textures—puff stitches for depth or shells for elegance—while checking symmetry every few rows.

Step 5: Straps and Handles

The straps are reinforced with tight double crochets for strength. I twist or braid them for comfort, attaching securely with multiple rounds to handle real-life use.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Weave in ends invisibly, block with steam for shape, and add liners or tassels if custom. Each bag gets a final pat—ready as a lightweight, personality-packed essential. This slow process takes 8-15 hours per bag, making it truly one-of-a-kind. Shop our handbags and own a piece of this magic!
